Cupping
“Where there’s stagnation, there will be pain. Remove the stagnation, and you remove the pain.”
Cupping is an ancient healing technique that can promote circulation, release tension, and alleviate pain. Have you ever noticed those characteristic red circles on the backs of athletes while watching the Olympics? Those are cupping marks!
Cupping therapy uses various styles of cups from silicone to plastic - but the most commonly used form are Glass Cups. Suction is created when an alcohol-soaked cotton swab is ignited and quickly inserted and removed from a cup. This creates a vacuum that allows the cup to adhere tightly to the skin. What you'll feel is a wonderful pulling / pressure as blood is brought to the surface of the body and muscle tension is released. Think of it as a "reverse massage" - rather than pushing into the tissue, we are pulling the tissue upwards to create space and promote circulation.
Cups are usually placed and left for 15-20 minutes, but a "sliding cupping" massage can be performed when massage oil is placed beneath the cups. The circular marks left behind are painless and promote the body's natural healing response.
Here at The Wellness Clinic, cupping is available as an add-on modality when performed during an Acupuncture or Massage Therapy session or as a 30-minute standalone treatment.
